Egypt’s Academy of Arts has honored composer and pianist Omar Khairat with an honorary doctorate. The ceremony took place on Sunday, October 25, at the Academy’s theatre in Cairo’s Haram district. A concert by Khairat followed. Egyptian Television broadcast both live.
The Ceremony

The Academy’s council conferred the degree. Dr Nabila Hassan chairs it. She said the award recognises his contribution to Egyptian and Arab music and his influence on modern composition. Shafky El-Monieri presented the evening. Channel Two and the Egyptian Satellite Channel broadcast it live.
A Tribute to Family and Place
A key highlight of the program was a tribute to Abu Bakr Khairat, the renowned composer and architect who designed the Academy’s buildings and served as the Cairo Conservatoire’s first dean. Mentioned in Omar Khairat’s profile as his uncle and primary role model, the late pioneer’s legacy added profound familial significance to the ceremony, connecting the modern honoree directly to the campus’s origins.
A Career of Memorable Melodies

Khairat was among the first students to join the Cairo Conservatoire in 1959. He also played drums with the band Les Petits Chats in the 1960s and 70s. Since then, he has composed music for more than 100 films and television series. Many of his melodies are instantly recognised across the Arab world. Ahram Online lists film scores such as Qadeyet Aam Ahmed, E’dam Mayet and Al-Bakheel w Ana.
Recent Achievements and Performances

The honor follows a string of recent appearances. He played two nights at the Cairo Opera House on October 4 and 5. Earlier this month, he also performed a concert on the sidelines of the El Gouna Film Festival. In December 2025, he was honored at the first Arab Operas Festival in Doha. He has also been named Cultural Personality of the Year by the Sheikh Zayed Book Award.
Significance of the Doctorate
For readers, the doctorate underlines how film music shapes memory. Khairat’s themes have soundtracked family evenings for decades. In addition, honoring a composer inside the Academy’s own theatre connects performance with education. Therefore, the evening acknowledged both a legacy and a teaching institution.
