He pointed out that the first people authoritarians attempt to silence are not politicians, but journalists who ask questions, artists who refuse simplistic answers, and filmmakers, writers, actors, and musicians who insist that even those we have never met deserve our empathy.
The Hollywood star continued, explaining that stories have always posed a threat to those who trade in fear, while those who fear books, music, and stories are never the heroes of history. He stressed that movies may not stop wars, lower inflation, or fix elections, but they can accomplish something remarkable: reminding us that a stranger is never truly a stranger, and that they may be the hero of someone else’s story.
