The Royal Diriyah Opera House will Reflect the Country’s Rich Heritage and Modern Vision
Diriyah Company and the Royal Commission for Riyadh City have joined forces to launch the Royal Diriyah Opera House, a first of its kind in the Saudi Arabia kingdom as part of its ambitious Diriyah Gate project. The new Opera House is set to be a cultural and tourism destination that aims to showcase the country’s rich heritage and modern vision.
The opera house is scheduled to be located in the Boulevard area of Diriyah Gate, along with a convention center, a contemporary art museum, fashion houses, cafes, and art galleries, with a capacity of 20,000 seats and will host world-class performances and events.

Diriyah Gate is a $20 billion development that is expected to transform the historic city of Diriyah, the birthplace of the first Saudi state and the ancestral home of the royal family, into a global attraction. The project will include the restoration of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of At-Turaif, the original seat of power of the Saudi state, as well as the creation of new cultural, recreational, and educational facilities.
Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030
Diriyah Gate’s CEO, Jerry Inzerillo, said that the project will celebrate the past, present, and future of Saudi Arabia, and will reflect the country’s vision for a more diverse and inclusive society. He added that the project will also contribute to the economic diversification and job creation goals of the Vision 2030 reform plan.
Coinciding with the country’s National Day, Diriyah Gate’s first phase of assets will be opened on November 28, 2023. The project will also host the Diriyah Season, a series of events and activities that will showcase the city’s culture, heritage, and entertainment offerings. Some of the highlights of the Diriyah Season include a cultural concert, a traditional desert experience, an Arabian horse demonstration, an escape room, and the Formula E World Championship.
Diriyah Gate is one of the many initiatives that Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 is undertaking to enhance its cultural and tourism sector, as part of its efforts to open up to the world and diversify its economy. The country has recently eased its visa restrictions, launched new mega-projects, and hosted major international events, such as the G20 summit, Red Sea Film Festival, the Dakar Rally, and the Spanish Super Cup.
“A testament to the Kingdom’s commitment to celebrating its rich culture and heritage, the Royal Diriyah Opera House will be a key element of the second phase of the Diriyah masterplan. Encompassing 45,000 square meters, the opera house will be a beacon of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, showcasing Diriyah as a global hub of culture and creativity,” said a statement issued by the Diriyah company.

A Timeless and Cultural Symbol
Snohetta will design the building in Diriyah. “Through thoughtful integration of tradition and contemporary aesthetics, we aim to create a timeless cultural symbol that resonates globally,” said Kjetil Thorsen, the co-founder, and architect of Snohetta. “We have a deep appreciation and respect for Najdi architecture, which carries the soul of Saudi heritage. By weaving the intricate tapestry of Najdi motifs into a contemporary architectural narrative, we endeavor to craft a space that narrates the story of Diriyah’s rich history while embracing the boundless possibilities of Saudi Arabia’s future.”
Among many other attractions that Saudi Arabia is working on under its Vision 2030, Diriyah Gate is poised to become a landmark destination that will showcase the country’s rich history, culture, and vision to the world.
