The Red Sea Film Festival Kicks Off with a Memorable Opening Night

Unfolding at the UNESCO world heritage site of Jeddah Old Town, the region’s top stars brought grace and charm to the first ever Red Sea Film Festival red carpet. Envisioned by Chairman Mohamed Al-Turki, the region’s newest film festival started with a rather memorable night that could be defined with excitement and optimism.

The event was attended by the Arab world’s aficionados of cinema, such as the legendary Yousra and Leila Aloui as well as Saba Mubarak, Mohamed Henedi, Nelly Karim and jury member Hend Sabry. Amongst the attendees were also a number of international stars such as Catherine Deneuve, Anthony Mackie, Clive Owen, Hilary Swank, Vincent Cassel and Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Frémaux. Furthermore, the future patronages of cinema were spotted at the opening gala. Young stars Fatma Al Banawi, Sarah Tayaibah and Tara Emad captured hearts as they walked the glamorous carpet. In parallel a number of international models were also in attendance, including Irina Shayk, Shanina Shaik, Sara Sampaio and Angel Candices.

Naturally, the night’s fashion choices were rather unforgettable. Choosing to be dressed by their favorite Arab designers, few starlets managed to deliver picturesque looks. While Alessandra Ambrosio dazzled in an embellished white dress by Zuhair Murad, Maisaa Maghrabi chose Tony Ward, Reem Al Saeedi picked a red cape gown by George Hobikie, and designer Arwa Al Banawi dressed herself in a three-piece white suit.

The opening ceremony also witnessed multiple heart-warming moments that will forever be carved in the festival’s legacy. Delivering a candid speech, the first female Saudi filmmaker Haifaa Al Mansour spoke about her love for cinema and her joy to finally witness a day, when both cinema and women are eagerly celebrated in her home country. In line with the festival’s goal to recognize female powerhouses in the cinema industry, the ceremony witnessed the honoring of multiple acclaimed filmmakers. Laila Olui was awarded for her rich contributions to Arab cinema while the revered Catherine Deneuve was recognized for her remarkable career.

Set to run until the 15th of December, the first edition of the Red Sea Film festival is planned to bring an extensive program made up of 135 films from around the world. Moreover, the edition also promises to offer a wide spectrum of workshops and masterclasses; including Yousra’s highly-anticipated very first masterclass. Young Saudi and Arab talents are also at the heart of the festivities thanks to the Red Sea Fund, which is dedicated to support 100 projects.
